Edgartown

Edgartown is the island's first settlement - settled in 1642. Edgartown was a major whaling port in the 1800s and many of the buildings date back to this time during this building boom.

This is one of the busiest towns on the Vineyard, housing many shops, ice cream parlors, galleries, restaurants, bars (Edgartown is one of the two non-dry towns on the Vineyard), a movie theatre, and a beautiful harbor. It is also the passageway to Chappaquiddick. You simply take the On Time III Ferry a short distance to get there. 
The best way to see downtown Edgartown is to walk around. Main Street is beautiful with its harbor and waterfront. The famous Old Whaling Church (built in 1843) with its six massive columns is also located on Main Street. North Water Street has a row of Captain's homes which will impress all who walk down it. Treasures await you around every corner in this town. 
There are many beautiful beaches in the township of Edgartown. Norton's Point, known as Katama, is a barrier beach which provides surf as well as Katama Bay on the other side of the dunes. Lighthouse Beach located off North Water Street near the center of town offers calm waters and views of harbor activities. Fuller Street Beach is at the end of Fuller Street near Lighthouse Beach. Bend-in-the-Road Beach (part of Joseph Sylvia Beach), has ample parking and is accessible by bike trail. 
Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary with its 200 acres is about 3 miles outside the center of town on Vineyard Haven Road. Owned by the Massachusetts Audubon Society, there are many marked trails for hiking and programs throughout the year.
